The Moscow Ballet presents Great Russian Nutcracker, a full-length performance of the classic Christmas story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King to the Fox Theater!
Moscow Ballet’s mission is to bring internationally acclaimed Russian ballet to audiences across North America and to provide opportunities for fine arts enrichment and educational outreach for local communities. Every year, the Russian company puts together 100 engagements across the US and Canada. The Great Russian Nutcracker is based on Alexandre Dumas Père’s adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann. It’s a fairy tale ballet set to music by Tchaikovsky and it was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. The performance was first commissioned in 1891 by the director of Moscow’s Imperial Theatres, Ivan Vsevolozhsky. It premiered a week before Christmas in 1892 and made its debut in the Western countries in the 1940s. The original Great Russian Nutcracker was choreographed by Stanislav Vlasov (a former member of the Bolshoi Company) and included former Ballet Master Anatolie Emelianov (a Perm school graduate) along with Ballet Master Anna Nekhludova (a Bolshoi Academy graduate. The set and production design was done by Valentin Federov (a protégé of Bolshoi Theater’s legendary Valery Leventhal). The story is based on a young girl’s Christmas Eve and her first experience with the wider world and romantic love.
