Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, the sensational musical based on the 1944 novel, Anna and the King of Siam, is coming to the Fox Theatre!
The novel was written by American author Margaret Landon and is based on the life Anna Harriette Leonowens; an Indian-born British travel writer, educator and social activist. It went on to sell over a million copies and was translated into more than twenty languages. In 1950, Landon sold the musical play rights to Richard Charles Rodgers (composer, songwriter, and playwright) and Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II (librettist, producer, and director). The musical features an impressive ensemble of artists who bring to life the blossoming romance between a widowed English governess (Anna Leonowens) and the King of 19th Century Siam. Anna arrives in 1860s Siam (now Thailand) to live at the palace of King Mongkut and be the teacher to his many children, providing them with a secular, westernised education. She finds the Siamese culture to be a strange and alienating one, and the king, a critical and arrogant employer. As time passes, the initial coldness between them begins to thaw, and a delicate romance takes its place. The musical debuted on March 29, 1951, at Broadway's St. James Theatre and though it wasn’t an immediate hit, it’s now widely regarded as one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's greatest accomplishments.
