Sesame Street Live!, the longest running stage show for children is coming to the Fox Theatre!
Sesame Street was conceived in 1966 during discussions between TV producer Joan Ganz Cooney and Carnegie Foundation vice president Lloyd Morrisett. Their goal was to create a children's TV show that would leverage the addictive qualities of television to do something useful such as helping young children prepare for school. The series premiered on November 10, 1969 and it became very popular for its educational content and images communicated through the use of Jim Henson's Muppets, animation, short films, humor, and cultural references. Though initially funded by the US government and private foundations, the show has now become somewhat self-sufficient due to licensing revenues, international sales, and other media. A 2008 survey estimated that 77 million Americans had watched the series as children and by 2009, Sesame Street (via independent productions) was being broadcast in more than 140 countries, with over 120 million viewers of its various international versions. With 159 Emmy Awards and 8 Grammy Awards, Sesame Street has won more awards than any other children's show. In Sesame Street Live's latest show (titled Lets Party!), the Sesame Street community discovers choosing a party theme is more challenging than they could have ever imagined.
