Sturgill Simpson, Kentucky’s sensational country music artist is bringing his signature sounds to the Fox Theater!

John Sturgill Simpson was born in Jackson in 1978 and is a country and roots rock singer-songwriter. He began his musical journey by forming the bluegrass band Sunday Valley in 2004. The band split up in 2012 and Sturgill moved to Nashville to pursue a solo career. He self-funded and self-released his debut solo album (High Top Mountain) in 2013 and it hit #31 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. His musical style falls under the outlaw country genre and fellow country musician Shooter Jennings has said, “Sturgill isn't imitating at all, and he sounds like my favorite era of my dad, the Seventies, when he would sing quieter and more conversational. That's what struck me about Sturgill from Day One. And still does.” Sturgill cites Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Keith Whitley, and Marty Robbins as his main influences and his sound has been described by as “a mesmerizing and sometimes bewildering mix of traditional country sounds, contemporary philosophy, and psychedelic recording-studio wizardry.” He’s had a stellar career with 3 studio albums and he’s won 3 Americana Music Awards and received a 2015 Grammy Award nomination for Best Americana Album (for his second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music).
