Valentine's Day Soul Jam, the all star concert featuring Russell Thompkins Jr. and The New Stylistics and Gerald Alston and The Manhattans is coming to the Fox Theatre!
The Manhattans were formed in Jersey City in 1962 by George "Smitty" Smith, Winfred "Blue" Lovett, Kenny Kelley, Richard Taylor, and Edward "Sonny" Bivins. Over the years, their musical style has spanned many genres such as doo wop (a style - that was developed in the 1940s from R&B, harmony vocal group, a cappella, negro spirituals, barbershop, gospel, ballad, blues, jump blues, and swing – featuring vocal group harmony, nonsense syllables, a simple beat, sometimes little or no instrumentation, and simple music and lyrics), R&B, soul (a genre that was the result of the urbanization and commercialization of rhythm and blues in the '60s), quiet storm (a subgenre of contemporary R&B music - named after the eponymous 1976 single by Smokey Robinson - that’s characterized by understated, mellow dynamics, slow tempos, and relaxed rhythms), smooth soul (a subgenre of soul featuring melodic hooks and production that capture the right seductive mood), and Philly soul (a subgenre that adds sweeping strings, seductive horns, and lush arrangements to soul’s deep rhythms). They’ve had a stellar career with many hit albums and a Grammy Award (for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal)
Don’t miss your chance to see one of those classic R&B vocal groups who managed to achieve incredible career longevity by adapting their style to fit changing times!
